New project!

Today I spent an afternoon in the School of Art, working on my new project for the exhibition. The exhibition is going to be shown in May, and thinking about it is both scary and exciting at the same time!

Dried flowers

Flower studies

The project involves a lot of dried flowers, hung all over my studio space. These three paintings are just some quick studies I made to have an idea of the best background colour. The plan is to paint around 12 of these boards, including different flowers in each painting. They are painted with acrylic paint on gessoed cardboard (around 15 x 20 cm).

Painting Projects

Today, I have been to the School of Art taking photos of my works from the second year. It is more difficult to get a great photo of a painting than I thought it would be!

These three paintings are the result of my project aiming to paint the living room, focusing on the different moods and changes in the atmosphere:

Here is an extract from my artist statement regarding these paintings; ‘I would say that my art is about feelings and connection. Feelings of subtle changes and feelings about space and light. I make art about whatever speaks to me, whatever I can connect with. (…).
In painting this semester, I have tried to capture the essence of my living room in the changing environment. As I started off painting my pictures in the winter, they became very dark and mysterious, a place you would not feel comfortable staying in by yourself. From then on, I have tried to create more light in my paintings as the seasons’ change and result are a much happier and cozier living room that is portrayed. The subject is still the same, a sofa, chairs and a table, I have only added a few details and focused on the differences in the light and darkness’.

I made these four paintings in the first semester last year. The first painting is an abstract representation of the back of the School of Art and the other three are flower studies.

I will shortly update you on my painting project that I am working on this semester.

Paint a Legend!

Last semester and up until now I have been doing a Lifelong Learning course called Museum and Gallery Education and Interpretation along with my Fine Art degree. And today we had our final task in this course; we held a workshop in the National Library of Wales! (“We” being Luciana and myself). There were different workshops held throughout the whole week by other students in our class, all of them with the theme of legends. Some of the workshops included clay, lego and costumes – we held one called Paint a Legend. It was a little bit of preparation for this, since it was two hours long and the children between five and ten years old.

First we showed a powerpoint including a story of King Arthur and pictures of legends. The story was read by two members of Aberystwyth University Medieval Re-Enactment Society, one knight and one lady, that were so kind to show up all dressed up (even with the proper underwear!) and stay during the workshop. After the powerpoint the children could chose what they wanted to do: colour-in drawing of legends or do painting in the wet room. They made some really good paintings – I was impressed!

This was not something we had to do for this course, holding the workshop was voluntary, but I am so happy that I did! It was a very good experience that I will take with me into my further education and future jobs. The children were so happy doing something creative within the local community and it was a very fun being a part of this!
